PERDITA, IN FINDING(S) / QUANTITARE—GLAICES (EXPONENTIAL ICE, GULLY BREEN / SVALBARD TERRITORY)
Comprised of 11 prints each mounted on a thin layer of board, then mounted together, Quantitare - glacies forms a hypnotic exponential convergence that both builds forward in space while visually pulling the viewer in. This kinetic imagery feels deceptively fixed and unsteadying reinforcing the limitations of capturing and comprehending through the photographic. The smallest print is the scale of the original 4x5 negative. Its edges are revealed overtly pointing to the act of documenting and the medium as a complicated player in our cultural understanding of the natural world. At this key moment of incredible flux we are reminded of the instability of existing climate challenges, the exponential loss of ice in the far north, and the failure of photography to translate related magnitudes.
